Birth Plan /
Preferences for Vaginal and Cesarean Births

Composing your Birth Plan can build confidence and be a powerful communication tool in working with your partner and care provider. Spending time envisioning this special day and educating yourself about your birthing options will help you feel prepared and confident. Reviewing your birth plan / preferences with your provider will help you to determine their level of support for your birth choices.

RIBN uses the term birth “preferences” as opposed to “plan” because plans can be regarded as rigid and uncompromising if any unforeseen changes arise in your birth experience. Using the term “Birth Preferences” indicates you understand changes may occur during your labor and birth, and they are much more accepted and supported by doctors, midwives and labor nurses as a result.
